Author Carol Kreger, a newcomer to the literary scene, offers readers a tantalizing glimpse into her debut novel, “Dark Secrets White Lies.” Set against the backdrop of South Carolina and other locales, Kreger’s novel weaves a complex tale of love, history, and intrigue.

Kreger shares insights into her background and journey as an author. Originally hailing from Michigan, Kreger and her husband moved to Manning in 2019.

Reflecting on her upbringing, Kreger reminisces, “I grew up in Michigan. I lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan... had a lot of summers right next to Lake Superior.”

Despite her lack of formal training as a writer, Kreger’s passion for literature and storytelling fueled her creative endeavors. Inspired by a vivid dream, Kreger embarked on the ambitious journey of crafting her novel, drawing from her extensive research on historical events such as the Civil War and life in the 1800s.

Recounting the genesis of her story, Kreger shares, “I had a dream. And when I woke... the story was already in my head.”

Kreger’s writing process was marked by moments of inspiration, often striking at unexpected times. “I would be in the shower, or I would be in the car somewhere and all of a sudden, I’d have a new chapter in my head,” she reveals.

Embracing a freewheeling approach to writing, Kreger eschewed strict deadlines in favor of organic creativity.

In “Dark Secrets White Lies,” author Carol Kreger crafts a mesmerizing tale of love, betrayal, and the eternal struggle between darkness and light. Set against the backdrop of colonial India and the American West, the story follows Clayton Masters, a man torn between two worlds and haunted by his vampiric nature.

From his privileged upbringing in India to his tumultuous encounters in London’s high society, Clayton grapples with his identity and the dark forces that threaten to consume him.

After a harrowing escape from a vampire seductress, Clayton finds refuge in the New World, where he seeks solace in the arms of Mary Ellington, a spirited nurse with secrets of her own.

As their forbidden love blossoms amidst the backdrop of war and treachery, Clayton and Mary must confront their deepest fears and confront the demons of their past. But when a vengeful enemy threatens to tear them apart, they are forced to make a fateful decision that will determine their fate for eternity.

Beyond the captivating storyline, Kreger infuses her novel with touches of humor, adding depth and charm to the narrative. “It comes up at odd places... People are people, you know,” she observes. From quirky encounters with cowboys to introspective musings on life’s unexpected twists, “Dark Secrets White Lies” offers a delightful blend of wit and emotion.

Kreger’s journey as an author is as compelling as her novel itself. From the early stages of drafting to the final touches of editing, Kreger found support and encouragement from her community, including her neighbor and editor. “It was wonderful... the give and take was wonderful,” Kreger recalls of her collaborative process.
