Hindsights from Monarch Strong 2023 winners

It is said, as lions walk away from their partly devoured kill, after some distance, they have a curious habit of pausing, turning back, and looking intently to examine what is happening all around - as if deeply in thought, introspecting on the recent sequence of events. The Lion gazes in complete command.—Hindsight. Similarly, strong leaders have the uncanny ability to periodically pause in a calm demeanor and reflect on what is happening around them to gain a better perspective as they learn from past experiences while fully engaged in the present.

We caught up with some of the Monarch Strong 2023 winners who were so grateful for their MSC scholarships. These young leaders have courageously left home for college to face uncertain futures that command readiness and confidence to succeed. As they reflect over their first semester, they offered some life tips to pass on to college bound students.

University of South Carolina-Columbia freshman, Waveland McCabe, IV “Mac” shared, “Through the MSC Scholarship, I was able to start my journey in pursuing my degree and furthering my education, getting me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a neurologist. If I knew as a student at Manning High School what I know now, I would prepare for the transition from high school to college as soon as possible. The best ways to prepare would be starting early on applying for scholarships and becoming familiar with the campus you plan on attending. It’s never too early to plan for your future.”

Winthrop University freshman, LaJada White, said, “With the MSC Scholarship, I was able to pay for my laptop required for my major and also buy a few required textbooks for my courses. I am so grateful and blessed to have the Monarch Strong Corporation. They were such an amazing help in not only my financial aid, but also in my overall transition to college. If I knew as a student at Manning High School what I know now, I would have applied to scholarships way early on. College is so much fun, but it’s also expensive. Those semester bills will not pay itself so it’s important that you have a financial plan before you even walk across that stage for your diploma.”

University of South Carolina-Aiken freshman, Ashley Felipe, commented, “The MSC scholarship was a big help in making college finances less stressful. The scholarship essentially provided me with the freedom to concentrate my education and personal growth without the constant burden of financial concerns. Instead of constantly worrying about the costs associated with tuition, textbooks, and other essentials, I could immerse myself in my coursework, and engage in meaningful learning experiences. If I knew as a student at Manning High School what I know now, I would emphasize the importance of seeking out available resources. College presents challenges, but with determination and the support of scholarships like MSC, students can overcome obstacles and thrive. I encourage Manning High School college-bound students to embrace every opportunity, stay resilient, and believe in their potential.”

Charleston Southern University freshman, Mary Louise Jones, stated, “The Monarch Strong Scholarship  has helped me tremendously by helping me pay for my college so that I can accomplish my career goals and have fun while doing it.” Mary Louise advised students to stay on top of their studies, but also to let loose a little.
