The Clarendon County Archives and History Center is celebrating National Archives Month this October with a series of events and initiatives aimed at preserving and showcasing the region’s history. With the theme “Unlocking the Past and Enriching the Future,” the Archives are highlighting their mission to protect and make accessible the rich history of Clarendon County.
The Clarendon County Archives maintain an extensive collection of historical records, genealogical resources, and local artifacts. Their team is dedicated to cataloging, digitizing, and ensuring the preservation of documents, photographs, personal stories, and artifacts. A significant recent achievement for the Archives team has been the successful digitization of several key collections. By making these collections available in digital format, the Archives have increased accessibility for researchers and history enthusiasts alike. One of the key events taking place this October is “Ask an Archivist Day” on October 16. During this event, County Archivist Meesha L. Witherspoon will be available online throughout the day to answer questions from the public about archival practices, history preservation, and Clarendon County’s historical resources.
The Clarendon County Archives will also be featured in an exhibit at the South Carolina State Fair in Columbia from October 9 through October 20. The exhibit will be part of the fair’s “46 Reasons to Celebrate” theme and will showcase historic photographs and cherished artifacts from the Archives’ collection. The display is designed to highlight the unique aspects of Clarendon County and its history to a broader audience.
Additionally, the Archives team is planning a Saturday Seminar focused on beginner’s genealogy. This seminar will provide participants with an introduction to genealogical research and the resources available at the Archives to help them explore their family histories.
