Kingstree’s own, Darius Rush, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts last week on day three of the 2023 NFL Draft. A former C.E. Murray War Eagle and South Carolina cornerback, Rush was the No. 138 overall pick in the fourth round. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball, golf, and track during high school.

A 2017 graduate, Rush is one of the only young men still representing the War Eagles on the football field considering the school’s merge with Kingstree High School in 2022. He is an outstanding athlete, and totaled three interceptions, 15 pass break-ups, four tackles for a loss, and one forced fumble during his last two seasons as a Gamecock.

In a press release by himself, Darius said, “The last five years here at the University of South Carolina have just been incredible. It’s been full of memories that will last forever and that I’ll cherish forever.”

In honor of Rush’s success, the Williamsburg County School District named Apr. 21 Darius Rush Day, and a parade was held in his honor at 4pm that Friday. His jersey worn during his time at C. E. Murray was retired in a ceremony following the parade. Darius was honored at the S.C. House of Representatives the previous day, Thursday, Apr. 20. Kingstree native and Representative of the 101st District, Roger Kirby, spoke highly of Rush and his extensive athletic career, calling him a “true multi-sport athlete.”

“Mr. Darius Rush epitomizes the courage, determination, leadership, and character necessary to attain excellence in athletic performance and as an individual,” said Kirby.

Not only is Rush an incredible football player, he also obtained a degree last May with a degree in sports entertainment. Senator Ronnie Sabb presented a Senate Resolution to Darius to honor his excellence in all areas of life. Representative Kirby went on to express how proud Williamsburg County, Greeleyville, and all of South Carolina are of him. “Congratulations sir, well-done, best of luck to you in your future,” Kirby concluded.

Make sure to support Darius Rush in the upcoming season as secondary cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts.
