WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: Kimberly O. Johnson

Posted

Each week during March, The Manning Times will feature a different impactful woman from Clarendon County for Women’s History Month. This week, we turn our attention to  South Carolina House Representative Kimberly Johnson. Johnson has been instrumental in many of the recent lawmaking changes in Clarendon County, and in South Carolina as a whole. Johnson made history recently as the first female African American to accept this particular position for Clarendon County, and as the first African American father/daughter duo to have seats in the house and the senate at the same time.

For this reason, we are happy to honor her during women’s history month:

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

I think it’s important to recognize all trailblazers of history because they have paved the way for a lot of the things we enjoy today. Women’s History Month to me means taking the time to recognize the amazing achievements made by women in the past, celebrating the achievements being made now and optimistically looking forward to what will happen in future generations.

What are some major accomplishments you’ve had over the years?

I’ve gotten great pride from helping to build Habitat homes. Initially, I thought my role on the board would be helping to fundraise. But looking back on that time, I really enjoyed getting up on a ladder and learning the different components of building a home. The icing on the cake is working alongside the family members that will live in that home. I was very proud to have been elected to the SC House of Representatives. I’ve worked on the campaign of others but it was my first time running for office. I also count it a major accomplishment to have been selected to serve as a Regional Director of the SC School Boards Association. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time bringing about change in the public schools on a local and regional level.

Why do you think it is important we celebrate Women’s History Month?

I think it’s important to celebrate and have knowledge of all history. But when history is assigned to a given month, it gives us the  opportunity to really focus on that part of history and even learn some things we may not have known which gives us more to celebrate. Women play such vital roles in every aspect of life. It varies from being out front to behind the scenes; and often times in addition to being a parent and/or spouse.

Who are some of the most influential and inspirational women you’ve had in your life?

It’s hard to call names because there are and have been so many. First and foremost, my mom. She is most comfortable behind the scenes but is a true force to be reckoned with. She prays for and supports not only a spouse as an elected official but also a child. Dr. Rose Wilder was my superintendent while in school and is still a mentor and good friend today. My, sister Kyndra is one of my best friends. She along with my other best friend Starbrina, motivate me daily and I am proud of their accomplishments. My friend Sharon Thames Simms is super supportive but she is also the one who tells me when I am wrong. I am a huge fan of FLOTUS Michelle Obama, philanthropist and talk show host Oprah Winfrey and R&B recording artist Fantaisa. I recently started a new job and it’s been a wonderful experience working with Dr. Lisa Justice. It’s a great environment working with women when there is empowerment and not competition. Several women in the SC House of Representatives who have welcomed me with open arms and have mentored me on more occasions than I can count. Last but not least, both of my grandmothers (now deceased). I know without a doubt, I am still receiving blessings because of the prayers they prayed. I know I’ve not named all of the phenomenal women I’m privileged to call a friend and/or influential but just know, I see you, I salute your accomplishments, and I appreciate you.

What advice would you give to young women navigating life?

In life, on a job, in a relationship or whenever, It’s ok to start over, just don’t give up.

What is something you wished you could have told your younger self?

To literally take my time and enjoy the small things in life because as you get older, you realize they are the most important.

What Qualities Make a Great Female Leader?

First, accepting the call to leadership because so often we shy away from the opportunity. Most would rather play a supportive role to someone they are just as qualified for if not more so. Then, just taking it day by day. Surrounding yourself with a team that supports you being in leadership and has the knowledge needed to help you be a better leader.

Why is it important that more women are represented in leadership roles?

I think leadership qualities are something women have always possessed. Women help spouses with presentations, their children with homework assignments, their male supervisors with huge contracts and deals that benefit the company. It’s something we’ve always done but again more so behind the scenes. I think women bring a tremendous amount of knowledge, compassion, empathy and passion to the leadership roles we see us more comfortably stepping into.

What do you enjoy most about celebrating Women’s History Month?

Simply because I don’t believe we do it enough, I enjoy doing it on special occasions/accomplishments and for no reason at all.
