Water garden featured on Azalea Club Garden Tour

Nine gardens will be on display the second weekend in June as the Azalea Garden club of Manning hosts “The Art of Gardening,” the first tour the club has hosted in more than a decade.

One garden which will be on display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 11 is the Water feature garden of Ron and Sherrie Wall, 1079 Country Club Circle in Manning.

As you enter the garden gate at 1079 Country Club Circle, you will see and hear the first of nine water features and fountains scattered throughout the yard. The koi pond has been in place for 20 years, with a major expansion adding the rock waterfall in 2015. Koi swim peacefully among aquatic lilies under the large Palmetto tree and two Japanese maples. Landscape design in the upper yard was completed by Paul Bishop in 2013, with the addition of the swimming pool and spa. Lawns of zeon zoysia are surrounded by azaleas, drift roses and hyrdrangeas, make this an ideal spot to enjoy a sunny afternoon.

Follow the winding brick pathway past a climbing hydrangea, hostas, woodland ferns and more Japanese maples to the lower yard. There you will find Ron Wall’s smokehouse tucked into a shady oasis and accented by natural wetlands. Filled with hunting memorabilia, mounts and trophies, the smokehouse was built in 1993 with the kitchen addition added in 2004. Construction and design was done by Ron with the help of many wonderful friends who continue to gather to grill, enjoy a good cigar and reminisce. Other features of the lower yard include an observation deck and a firepit area completed in 2015. Gardenias, rhododendrons and azaleas provide seasonal color.

A rain date has been set from 1-5 p.m. June 12.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the tour. Boxed lunches are $10 each and must be ordered by June 4, Land said. For more information, or for tickets, call Judy Langley at (843) 617-0689 or Peggy Benton at (803) 460-6593.
