Sheriff’s Office warns of active phone, computer scams

SCAM ALERT: The Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office has been notified that several scams are currently circulating through phone/computer solicitation. Common Scams include: The “Missed Jury” scam, Fake Arrest Warrants, Publishers Clearing House, and IRS Impersonation

The Red Flags to Watch For: Urgency and Threats, Request for Sensitive Information, asking for unusual payments such as gift cards or wire transfers, promising unrealistic rewards and demanding you keep the interaction confidential.

What Scammers Ask For: Your Social Security Number, passwords, PIN’s, or bank account information, money to release a prize, clear a package, or pay taxes. Often scammers ask that you meet them at a particular location to complete the transaction.

What YOU Need to Do: Hang Up and DO NOT Reply, look up the organization’s official contact information and avoid clinking links or downloading files from an unknown source, notify Law Enforcement 803-435-4414. If a meeting location is requested, advise the scammer to meet you at the Sheriff’s Office.

Remember that Legitimate Organizations DO NOT demand immediate secrecy, threaten arrest, or ask for sensitive data like passwords, etc.
