Pleasant Grove School, in the lumber town of Alcolu, was established for African-American students in 1933, following the purchase of the 3 acres of land by Clarendon County School District 27. It was the first public school for black students in Clarendon County. The building has been vacant since the school closing in 1953 due to the South Carolina equalization program. The newly established Pleasant Grove Restoration project committee has be working on the building since February 2023. During the second phase, we are inviting the community to come out and join us with helping to clean up and beautify around the school. The Pleasant Grove restoration committee will be working on the school building located at 1021 Joe Maria Road, Alcolu, SC 29001, on Friday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, Feb. 17, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are excited about this project and progress and improvements. We hope to find many of those last students who attended Pleasant Grove School. We are asking community members and alumni who have connections to the school to come out and spend the day with us and share your story.
