A Manning woman was one of two people killed early Friday when a moped was struck from behind on U.S. Highway 301 in Orangeburg County, according to authorities.
The crash happened around 2:25 a.m. Oct. 3 near Jernigan Drive, about a mile and a half north of Orangeburg, Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said.
A 2024 JBLC moped, driven by 55-year-old Tyrone C. Tyler of Orangeburg, was traveling south on U.S. 301 when it was hit in the rear by a 2021 Kia sedan traveling in the same direction, Ridgeway said. The impact threw both riders from the moped into the roadway.
Tyler and his passenger, 70-year-old Audrey Hill of Manning, were pronounced dead at the scene, Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle confirmed. Both suffered blunt force injuries.
The driver of the Kia was not injured, and no other vehicles were involved.
It is not yet known whether either of the moped riders was wearing a helmet. The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
