An 84-year-old Manning man was killed early Friday in a two-vehicle collision on South Carolina Highway 260, according to the Clarendon County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The deceased was identified as John Russell Wynkoop.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the collision occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. Jan. 16 on SC 260 near the intersection with Durant Lane.
According to SCHP, two vehicles were involved. A 2007 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling west on SC 260, while a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Wynkoop, was traveling east on SC 260.
Highway Patrol said the vehicles collided near the intersection with Durant Lane. The Impala then traveled off the roadway to the right and struck a ditch, while the Silverado traveled off the roadway to the left and struck a fence.
Wynkoop, the sole occupant of the Impala, died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The driver of the Silverado was the only occupant of that vehicle and was not injured.
An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday at the Medical University of South Carolina, according to the coroner’s office. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
