Clarendon County Councilman and longtime community leader the Rev. William James (W.J.) Frierson Sr. died Friday, Dec. 26, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter. He was 72.
Frierson, a respected minister and public servant, served District 2 on Clarendon County Council for three decades, beginning in January 1995. County officials and community leaders remembered him as a steady, compassionate voice in county government and a faithful servant to both his congregation and the broader community.
“Clarendon County has lost a faithful servant and exceptional man,” Council Chairman Jay Johnson wrote in a social media post announcing Frierson’s passing. “Prayers for the family of Council Member Mr. W.J. Frierson.”
In a statement released Saturday, Clarendon County Administration said Frierson “faithfully served Clarendon County for 30 years with integrity, compassion, and enduring commitment.”
“His leadership in county government and his lifelong dedication to faith and service touched countless lives and leave a lasting legacy within our community,” the statement read.
Frierson was widely known not only for his role on County Council but also for his work in the ministry, where he served as a pastor and spiritual leader for many years. Friends and colleagues often described him as approachable, thoughtful and deeply committed to serving others.
According to his obituary, Frierson was born July 8, 1953, in Manning. He was the son of the late Haskell Frierson and Lula Hilton Frierson. He is survived by his wife, Delaney K. Walker Frierson.

County officials extended condolences to Frierson’s family and loved ones, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this time of loss.
Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Saturday.
