CCSD students win big at conference

F.E Dubose students had an incredible weeknd at the FCCLA State Conference. Members of the F.E DuBose Culinary Arts Chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) attended the state leadership conference held Mar. 31-Apr. 2, 2023 at the Embassy Suites and Convention Center in North Charleston. The team received various accolades and awards while representing the Career Center and Clarendon County School District.

Alayna Lemon waselected as a member of the 2023-2024 South Carolina State Executive Council of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). She will serve as the Vice President for Community service. Lemon had to run for the office by passing a placement exam, participating in an interview process, giving a campaign speech, and competing for voting delegates. The South Carolina FCCLA State Officer Program provides tremendous opportunities for students to gain new leadership skills, learn critical thinking, improve their planning and organizational skills, become stronger speakers, demonstrate initiative, and much more.

Zakia Baxter won the State Culinary arts Competition. This competition recognizes participants enrolled in culinary arts/food service training programs for their ability to produce a quality meal using industrial culinary arts/food service techniques and equipment. Participants must develop a plan for the time allotted, prepare menu items given to them during the event, and present their prepared items to evaluators. Baxter prepared chicken ala fresca on a bed of rice pilaf and sauteed zucchini.

Adrianna Cornell won the State Culinary Math Math Management award, which recognizes participants who use Family and Consumer Sciences skills to create an oral presentation that demonstrates the application of mathematical concepts in the culinary arts industry using the annual topic. Before the competition, participants must prepare a file folder, oral presentation, and visuals. On-site, participants respond to a case study.

Maria Fleitas Carmona, Katelyn McKenzie, and Joseph atkinson won the SC Cupcake Wars Competition; participating teams baked, decorated, and presented three dozen cupcakes, three different flavors (one dozen of each flavor) within two hours of time, The team prepared creme vanilla brulee, strawberry, and peach cobbler cupcakes and displayed their creations incorporating the conference theme, ‘Incredible.’

Winners of the events have the opportunity to represent South Carolina at the FCCLA National Competiton to be held at the National Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado, Jul 2-6, 2023. Chef Jean Shaw is the Culinary Arts FCCLA Advisor.

“Our culinary students are a great group of students. They could transfer the skills and techniques they learned in the classroom and apply them to real-world scenarios in operating and managing all aspects of a restaurant business,” states Chef Shaw. “These students represent the best of F.E DuBose and reflect positively upon the school, their families, and all of Clarendon County.”
