Students with the F.E. DuBose Career Center’s law enforcement class have set a fundraising goal of $1,000 with their upcoming Dance-a-Thon, scheduled to begin 8 p.m. Saturday at the center’s auditorium on U.S. 521 in Manning.
The event, which will end at 1 a.m. Sunday, will provide refreshments for sale, and all proceeds will benefit Carolina Concerns of Police Survivors, a state group that aids the families of fallen law enforcement officers.
“One of the main goals of the program, second to providing a foundation for young men and women interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, is to give back to the community,” said Instructor Ladell Grice. “This is done through community service projects.”
Several projects throughout the years have included Adopt-A-Highway; the Big Brother and Big Sister programs; offering a self-defense class for women; a concealed weapons permit training class; food drives; Adopt-A-Family; and helping with the Clarendon County Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial event.
“This year, the class decided on a Dance-a-Thon to raise money for Carolina COPS,” Grice said. “The group provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.”
Grice said the death last year of Inv. Holmes N. Smith in a car wreck not far from the F.E. DuBose campus “touched the hearts of the law enforcement students.”
“They students adopted Holmes’ family for Christmas and presented Tonia Mallett-Smith, his wife, with a food basket with items to cook a complete dinner, along with gifts for every member of the family,” Grice said.
A donation of $5 is required for admission. Music will be provided by DJ David.
