A 36-year-old Clarendon County man with nine outstanding drug warrants more than a year old was captured Saturday night by the K-9 unit of the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office.

Ricky Coard was initially stopped a traffic checkpoint in the vicinity of the Rev. J.W. Carter Road and Alex Harvin Highway, according to Capt. Rick Richards with the Clarendon County Narcotics Unit.

"They told him that he was wanted, and he took off," Richards said Tuesday. "We had nine outstanding warrants on him at that point, for distribution and possession of marijuana and crack cocaine, and one for PCP, and another for a gun."

Those warrants were initially filed with the Clerk of Court based on prior search warrants, Richards said. Coard added to his charges Saturday after running from deputies, however. Now, he remains at the Clarendon County Detention Center without bond for failure to stop for blue lights, second offense; resisting arrest; distribution of marijuana; and possession of marijuana.

The county's K-9 unit apprehended Coard after he fled his car on foot.

According to a check through the State Law Enforcement Division, Coard has two prior drug distribution convictions, receiving seven years and five years, respectively for those back in the early 2000s.
