Harvest Community School receives $500 grant

Farm Bureau Agent Wayne McKenzie presented a $500 check Wednesday morning to students, faculty and staff at Harvest Community School in Summerton. The school won the Dueling Dirt contest in mid-October through votes on Facebook. The $500 Garden Grant from Farm Bureau Insurance of South Carolina will go to help the students maintain their own garden. "We started one last year, but it was kind of a garden on a dime," said Headmaster Angie Bruner. "The kids loved the concept of having a  garden. This will allow them to build bigger garden boxes, and some of the money will help us purchase equipment that we can use year after year." She said a local farmer, Roger "Bubba" Flowers, donated kale and broccoli seeds. "We will grow that and eat some of it, but we will give the rest of it to the food pantry at the Catholic church in town," Bruner said. Bruner said the school is now in its second year, and serves grades kindergarten through 11. "We have 41 students," she said. "Next year we will have two seniors. It's crazy, but crazy-good. We've been very blessed."
