The Wyboo Golf Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, marking a milestone that General Manager and Golf Pro Victor Grubb believes is a testament to the club’s steady growth and community support.

“It’s a big deal,” Grubb said. “It has really taken off and is going in the direction we hoped it would.”

Grubb, who has been with the club for the last 18 years, emphasized the importance of his team, which consists of 13 to 15 staff members. “I’ve had a loyal and dedicated staff throughout my tenure as general manager,” he said. “Their commitment has played a major role in the club’s success.”

The club, which was designed by Tom Jackson, a Carolina golf course architect and a member of the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame, has become a fixture in the local golf scene. “This is regarded as the best course in this region,” Grubb shared, citing numerous recognitions from the golfing community, including being listed as one of the top 10 public access courses in South Carolina by The State newspaper.

Reflecting on some of the most memorable moments at the course, Grubb highlighted the club’s green renovation project completed in 2021. “That was a big deal for us,” he said. “We were down from June through August with temporary greens, but it was worth it to improve the course.”

In addition to the green renovations, the club underwent a bunker renovation a few years prior and has plans for more extensive bunker work in the near future. “We’re always looking for ways to improve,” Grubb said.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the club is offering its 129 members a 25% discount, a gesture approved by the board to thank its patrons for their continued support. “We wanted to do something simple yet meaningful for our members,” Grubb explained.

The semi-private club, which attracts both members and public players, draws a significant portion of its visitors from out of state, particularly from Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Tennessee. “Once people come here and experience the course, they keep coming back,” Grubb said.

Grubb also reflected on the lasting relationship between the club and the community, especially as development around the course continues. “It’s a win-win for the golf course and the developers,” he said, noting that the increase in housing around the course has brought in more players.

As Wyboo Golf Club looks toward the future, Grubb remains optimistic. “We understand that we need to make improvements,” he said, mentioning upcoming projects such as restroom renovations on the course. “We’re thankful that business has been steadily improving, and we’re committed to continuing that progress.”

Despite the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Grubb sees the club’s resilience as a reason for its continued success. “We had to alter how we operate during COVID, but we came through it,” he said. “The golf industry is doing well now, and so are we.”

As he approaches retirement in a few years, Grubb is proud of the club’s legacy and the impact it has had on the community. “When I retire, I’ll have been here 25 years, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” he said. “We’re proud of where we’ve gone from, and I’m excited to see where the club goes in the future.”
