Well Watered Ministries, a local nonprofit community outreach organization, will host two free community dinners this month following a strong turnout at its inaugural meal in late December.
The dinners are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 22, and Thursday Jan. 29, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., or until supplies run out, at Summerton Methodist Church, 2 Briggs St., across from Dollar General.
Tonight’s event marks the organization’s second community dinner. The first, held Dec. 30, drew a large crowd – emphasizing the ongoing need for food assistance in the area, according to organizers.
“Our first dinner showed us just how important this is for our community,” said Eliana Jenkinson, director of Well Watered Ministries. “There are a lot of people who need a warm meal and a place where they feel welcome, especially during the winter months.”
The dinners are open to the public and free of charge, with no registration required.
In addition to providing hot meals, the organization is collecting cold-weather supplies for residents in need. Donations of blankets, coats, hats, gloves and other winter gear are being accepted. Items may be gently used but must be free of stains or tears.
Jenkinson said the winter gear collection is especially important as colder temperatures continue across the region.
“This time of year can be really hard for people who don’t have reliable heat or warm clothing,” she said. “If someone has a coat or blanket they’re no longer using, that item could make a real difference for someone else.”
Well Watered Ministries is also hosting a January food drive contest aimed at restocking its food pantry. Community members are encouraged to clean out their pantries and donate non-expired food items. Earlier this month, the pantry served 70 families over two Mondays, providing food assistance to 174 individuals.
As part of the contest, donors may post a photo of their food donation and tag the organization on social media for a chance to win a $25 gift card to Jilly Beans Cafe. Participation in the contest is optional, and donations are accepted regardless of whether participants post online. The challenge runs through Feb. 9, though pantry donations are accepted year-round.
Volunteers are also needed to assist with meal service and distribution. Those interested in volunteering or donating items may call (803) 662-2923.
“Our goal is to meet people where they are and help however we can,” Jenkinson said. “Whether that’s a hot meal, a warm coat, or groceries for the week, it all matters.”
