Volunteers needed to help local abused and neglected children

The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program is calling on Clarendon County residents to help make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children.

The program, a division of the South Carolina Department of Children’s Advocacy, is offering free virtual training sessions for those interested in becoming volunteer advocates. Upcoming training dates are scheduled for August 5, September 2, and September 30, 2025.

Guardian ad Litem volunteers serve as court-appointed representatives for children involved in Family Court legal proceedings through the Department of Social Services (DSS). These volunteers speak on behalf of the child’s best interests and ensure their voices are heard during complex legal processes.

“Our volunteers serve as strong advocates, upholding children’s best interests and prioritizing their well-being,” said Jennifer Burch, director of the Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem Program. “With every child served needing a voice, the call to action grows for dedicated volunteers to step forward.”

To become a GAL volunteer, individuals must be at least 21 years old, have a clean criminal record, no previous DSS case history, and be willing to contribute four to five hours a month.

Currently, only 13 volunteer guardians are serving 64 children in Clarendon County. While GAL staff help fill the gaps, the need for more volunteers is urgent.
