Vision by Design hosts free fruit and vegetable giveaway in Summerton

Vision by Design, a non-profit dedicated to supporting the community, hosted a free fruit and vegetable giveaway on July 26 at Jehovah Jireh Outreach Ministries in Summerton. The event, “Reaching Beyond the Walls,” is part of Vision by Design’s Positive Produce Promotions program, aimed at distributing fresh produce to those in need.

Kiz Everette, founder of Vision by Design, has been at the forefront of revitalizing services for seniors and the broader community since taking over operations from the Clarendon Council on Aging (CCOA) last year. “I was determined not to close and not have a place for the seniors to be able to come,” said Everette. Her efforts led to the successful transition of senior services to her non-profit, ensuring continued support and introducing new programs.

The Positive Produce Promotions program, a brainchild of Everette, allows Vision by Design to partner with local farmers and distribute free fruits and vegetables throughout Clarendon County. “I got certified as a distributor and a producer through the South Carolina agriculture department,” Everette explained. “That allows me to partner with farmers who can give me free fruits and vegetables to distribute to the county.”

The free produce giveaway in Summerton underscores Vision by Design’s commitment to addressing food insecurity in rural areas. Everette and her team distributed fresh fruits and vegetables to numerous families, highlighting the critical role of community support in combating hunger.

The importance of organizations like Vision by Design cannot be overstated. Food insecurity is a significant issue in rural communities across the United States, affecting nearly 3 million households. Rural areas, which account for 63% of U.S. counties, face unique challenges such as limited job opportunities and access to affordable, nutritious food. This often forces residents to rely on food pantries and charitable organizations like Vision by Design.

Food insecurity is linked to poorer health outcomes, with rural children experiencing higher rates of obesity and related health problems. Federal programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) play a crucial role in alleviating hunger, but ongoing support from local organizations and volunteers is essential to addressing this complex issue effectively.

In addition to the produce giveaways, Vision by Design offers various services, including the Sassy Seniors Sanctuary, Meals on Wheels, a small business center, housing preservation, and the Clarendon County Food Bank. The Sassy Seniors Sanctuary provides a safe space for seniors to gather for food, fellowship, and fun, while Meals on Wheels continues to deliver nutritious meals to homebound seniors.

Everette emphasized the importance of community support in sustaining these initiatives. “Vision by Design is always looking for volunteers, donations, and partnerships,” she said. “Our goal is to help people in their times of need and empower them to help themselves.”

Vision by Design also offers assistance to those experiencing food insecurity. The Clarendon County Food Bank is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and on Fridays by appointment. The food bank accepts pantry items and perishable, refrigerated items.
