On September 25, 2023, the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office responded to an area on US 301 about 1/2 mile south of the intersection of Brewington Road. Upon arrival, Deputies were informed by a road mowing crew that they had discovered what appeared to be skeletal remains lying in the ditch along the roadway. Investigators with the Sheriff's Office along with the Clarendon County Coroner's Office determined them to be a female. Items were collected from the immediate area to include a pocketbook and other papers that provided an identity to the remains. They were identified as 54-year-old Stacy Michele Burgess from the turbeville area of Clarendon County. It appeared from evidence collected at the scene that Burgess had been struck by a vehicle while walking along US 301. A Missing Person report on Burgess was filed by family members stating that she had left the Hampton Inn in Manning on August 23, 2023 and had not been heard from since. The SC Highway Patrol is now investigating this incident.
