Laurence Manning Academy announced Sunday evening that it will observe an e-learning day Monday, March 16, due to the potential for severe storms and extreme winds.
In a notice to families, the school said all students should check Microsoft Teams and Class Dojo throughout the day Monday for updates from teachers. All afternoon activities, athletic practices and games have been canceled. Students, parents and staff were also asked to check email for additional instructions and details.
Laurence Manning joins Clarendon Hall, which earlier Sunday announced it also will shift to an e-learning day Monday and cancel athletics and practices because of the forecast.
Forecasters have warned that the severe weather threat is expected to increase Monday across South Carolina. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division said Sunday that Monday carries a Moderate Risk, or Level 4 of 5, for severe weather, with the primary timeframe between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
According to SCEMD, the main threats are damaging winds and tornadoes. Some storms could produce wind gusts of 60 to 75 mph or higher, large hail and the potential for strong tornadoes rated EF2 or stronger. The National Weather Service forecast for the Manning area also calls for rain and thunderstorms Monday, with gusts as high as 40 mph.
Clarendon County School District had not announced any closures or schedule changes as of Sunday evening. The Manning Times will update if additional announcements are made.
