Clarendon County Emergency Management is urging residents to prepare for dangerously low temperatures after the National Weather Service issued an Extreme Cold Watch for much of central South Carolina and east-central Georgia.
The watch is in effect from Sunday evening through Monday morning, with wind chills expected to fall as low as 11 degrees.
Officials warn that the prolonged stretch of freezing weather may lead to ruptured water pipes, especially in homes not properly insulated.
“An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes,” the agency said in an alert Friday. “Be sure to protect outdoor faucets and drip water to help prevent ruptured pipes.”
Residents who must be outdoors are encouraged to dress in layers, including hats, face coverings, and gloves. To safeguard plumbing, officials recommend wrapping exposed pipes, draining irrigation systems and outdoor lines, or allowing faucets to drip slowly overnight.
Clarendon County Emergency Management said more updates will be issued as the weather system approaches.
