Unity in Our Community to bring neighbors together in Summerton

Posted

Well Watered Ministries is inviting residents to come together for a day of service, support, and connection during the Unity in Our Community event, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, at Wassau Park in Summerton. The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will feature food, free haircuts, a clothing closet, resource information, and activities for families.

Organizer Eliana Jenkinson said the inspiration for the event came from a desire to create something focused purely on helping others.

“We wanted to do something strictly for the community and people who need a little love,” Jenkinson said. “If you notice, the flyer doesn’t have logos or names because it’s not about the people sponsoring it—it’s about those who need help and the people making it happen. We need to get back to a true united community that takes care of each other.”

The event aligns closely with Well Watered Ministries’ mission of serving families and individuals facing hardships through compassion and connection. Jenkinson said the ministry reached out to local churches, businesses, and organizations to collaborate in hopes of building meaningful relationships with community members.

“Our core mission is to share the love of Jesus with anyone facing hardship,” she said. “People get through difficult times by being lifted up by others. That old saying, ‘it takes a village,’ is true – it’s biblical. Loving your neighbor means coming together and forming relationships.”

Among those joining the effort are Summerton Baptist Church and New Start Community Church, which are teaming up to provide a free lunch of hot dogs. Local barbers and hairstylists will volunteer their time to offer free haircuts, and a clothing closet will be available for attendees to browse for items they need.

Additional resources include representatives from South Carolina State University’s Clemson Exchange program, which teaches families how to cook healthy meals, and Medicaid, which will have a representative on-site to answer questions. The McLeod Nurse Family Partnership will provide information about its support program for young mothers, and Rep. Fawn Pedalino and her family are bringing a DJ and bounce house to keep the atmosphere fun for children and families.

Jenkinson expressed gratitude to Summerton Mayor Keith Bowman for his support and encouragement in hosting the event at Wassau Park.

“All of our partners have been amazing to work with and truly just want to serve those in the community,” she said.

Volunteers are still welcome to join. Set-up begins at 9:30 a.m., and anyone who wants to lend a hand can simply show up or call Jenkinson at (803) 662-2923 for more details.

Jenkinson said she hopes attendees walk away with more than just a free meal or haircut.

“I hope they see a little Jesus,” she said. “I hope people realize how easy and important it is for folks from different backgrounds – and even different sides of the ballot – to find common ground and make a positive impact in each other’s lives.”
