The Turbeville Town Council met for its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 14, approving several items and moving forward on plans for a new town stage and upcoming Christmas festivities.
Before adopting the evening’s agenda, council voted to table discussion on the sale of property to the Clarendon County School District. Minutes from the Sept. 9 meeting were approved as presented.
Council unanimously approved a request from Jennifer Powell to allow vendors to set up on one side of Main Street during the town’s annual Christmas parade. Powell’s request was approved 5-0.
The primary item of business for the evening was consideration of bids for the Turbeville Town Stage project. Following a brief discussion, council voted unanimously, 5-0, to accept the low bid of $88,750 from Turn Key Metal Structures of Sumter. Council briefly discussed the company’s previous work for the town before approving the contract.
Turn Key has acquired the required business license and was granted approval to begin work immediately. The stage, to be built on the town square near Green and Main streets, is scheduled for completion by Dec. 31, 2025, weather permitting.
Five total bids were received for the project. Turn Key’s bid was the lowest, followed by Corley Lawn and Construction ($108,000), JF Contractors ($112,000), Carraway Construction ($150,100), and Complete Solutions Contractors ($156,459).
Work continues on the Barrineau Public Utility water line project, though the town is awaiting further updates from the engineering firm overseeing the work. Officials said there has been no word yet from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority on the town’s Highway 301/Horse Branch water line grant application.
No new information was reported under the financial or utility reports. The Clarendon County Library construction project, planned for the rear of the town square, remains pending county approval of the bid award.
Earlier that evening, the Turbeville Board of Zoning Appeals met and approved a special exception for construction of the new library by a 2-0 vote.
Council was also informed that training for members of the Board of Zoning Appeals and Planning Commission is scheduled for Oct. 28 at Town Hall.
Town officials noted that efforts continue to reestablish a Turbeville Tree Board, part of a long-term goal to regain the community’s Tree City USA designation, which Turbeville last held from 2003 to 2009.
The meeting concluded with standard reports and no additional new business. The next regular meeting for the Town of Turbeville is scheduled for Nov. 11, 2025.
