The Town of Summerton honored the late Mayor Tony Junious on Friday, officially proclaiming December 6 as “Mayor Tony Junious Day” in recognition of his legacy and contributions to the community. The announcement came during a special ceremony held on what would have been Junious’ 49th birthday, nearly a year after his untimely death in a car wreck.

Dozens of residents, community leaders, and family members gathered at Town Hall and the park on Railroad Avenue to celebrate the life of the Summerton native and the town’s first Black mayor. The event, organized by current Mayor Keith Bowman and the Summerton Town Council, was a tribute to Junious’ impactful tenure as mayor and his dedication to improving the town he called home.

Junious’ sister, Lakesha Junious, said that he was a family man who always put others first and expressed gratitude for the community’s support on what would have been a special day for him.

During his two years as mayor, Junious spearheaded transformative initiatives for Summerton, including securing $12 million in infrastructure grants, overseeing significant improvements to the town’s water system, organizing a community cleanup group, and participating in efforts to expand broadband access. He also championed public safety measures, including passing an ordinance on firearms in response to rising gun violence.

His cousin and former town council member, Regina Brown, shared that Junious’ leadership set a standard for the town and expressed confidence in Mayor Bowman’s ability to carry forward his vision.

The ceremony featured a series of heartfelt tributes, including a moment of silence, a candle-lighting by Junious’ widow, and the reading of the proclamation by Mayor Bowman. The proclamation, signed by Bowman and the Summerton Town Council, praised Junious for his dedication to public service, describing him as “a force for good and a stabilizing influence” during challenging times.

The event concluded with a balloon release, symbolizing hope and the continuation of Junious’ vision for the town.

Mayor Tony Junious Day will serve as an annual reminder of his unwavering commitment to Summerton and his efforts to bring positive change to the community.

Junious, who served as mayor from 2022 until his passing in January 2024, was celebrated not only for his accomplishments in office but also for his deep ties to Summerton as a lifelong resident, husband, and father. His leadership continues to inspire residents and leaders alike, with many expressing their commitment to carrying forward his vision for a stronger, more connected community.

As the ceremony drew to a close, attendees reflected on Junious’ impact, vowing to honor his memory by continuing the work he started. For those who knew him, December 6 will always be more than just a day, it will be a celebration of a leader who left an indelible mark on the heart of Summerton.
