The Manning Times to host live discussion on data center project, moratorium

Posted

The Manning Times will host a live discussion Friday afternoon with two Clarendon County officials to address the proposed data center project, the county’s temporary moratorium and questions from the public.

Clarendon County Business Development Director George Kosinski and County Administrator Walt Ackerman will join The Manning Times for a Facebook Live discussion at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11.

The livestream comes as interest continues to grow surrounding the proposed $130 million data center project planned for Clarendon County and the county’s consideration of a temporary moratorium on certain data center and battery energy storage system applications.

In addition to discussing the project and moratorium, Kosinski and Ackerman will answer questions from the public during the livestream. Viewers will have an opportunity to call in live and direct their questions to the two county officials.

The Manning Times will release the call-in number and participation rules at noon Friday, three hours before the livestream begins.

The proposed project, known as Project 59, involves a cloud-storage facility planned for Spec Building No. 9 on approximately 32.5 acres. The proposed investment is about $130 million.

The project has emerged as county officials are also working to address how data centers and battery energy storage systems should be handled under Clarendon County’s Unified Development Code.

The Clarendon County Planning Commission recommended a six-month moratorium in August on most applications involving the two types of development while county officials work to establish definitions and regulations. The recommendation included exceptions for certain projects in Industrial I and Industrial II districts.

County Council has since taken up the proposed moratorium, with a third and final reading and public hearing scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14.

Friday’s livestream will give residents an opportunity to hear directly from Kosinski and Ackerman ahead of that meeting and ask questions about the proposed development, the moratorium and what comes next.

The livestream will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, on The Manning Times Facebook page. Call-in information and rules will be posted at noon Friday.
