Town of Summerton utility customers are seeing higher-than-usual September water bills after the town acknowledged that an August billing cycle was missed, leading to a combined two-month charge.
According to a billing notification released by the town’s Utility Department, the September bills include water readings dating back to July and reflect approximately 60 days of service. Officials said the August bill was not printed, meaning September’s bill covers two full cycles.
“This bill is showing usage for a two-month period,” the notice states. “Because this billing cycle covers more days than usual, your September bill may be higher.”
The town emphasized that regular monthly bills are normally based on the previous month’s usage. The letter, signed by the Utility Department, asked for residents’ understanding and thanked them for their cooperation as the town works to resolve billing issues.
The billing notice comes amid ongoing concerns from residents about water service and billing reliability. Summerton officials have addressed the issue during their regular council meetings, where residents may provide public comment. In addition, the Clarendon County Legislative Delegation, led by Rep. Fawn Pedalino and Sen. Jeff Zell, held a town hall earlier this year after residents raised concerns about billing problems and sought assistance beyond Town Hall.
Reports from earlier council meetings also noted questions surrounding the town’s billing software and meter reading systems, which some officials and residents believe have contributed to discrepancies.
Questions about the bills may be directed to Utility Clerk Shaquonna White at Town Hall, by phone at 803-485-2525 ext. 1, or by email at waterclerk@townofsummerton.com.
