Residents of Clarendon County will have an opportunity to meet candidates in the upcoming Clarendon County Council District 2 special election during a community meet-and-greet planned for Saturday, Feb. 28.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Phi Omega Omega Chapter of Manning, in partnership with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.® Theta Tau Zeta Chapter of Summerton, will host the event to give voters a chance to engage with candidates ahead of the March 10 special election.

According to organizers, the nonpartisan event is intended to help residents learn more about the candidates and their positions while encouraging civic participation. The meet-and-greet will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m., at Vision by Design, 206 S. Church St., Manning.

Jacqueline Sheriod-Scott, president of the Phi Omega Omega Chapter, said organizers reached out to all five candidates listed for the District 2 special election using information obtained through scvotes.gov.

As of this week, two candidates have confirmed they will attend the event: Delaney Kay Frierson and McKinely Hudson. Michelle Demery and Matthew Chapman notified organizers they are unable to attend, while Kim Jones had not responded as of the latest update.

Organizers emphasized that the event is open to the public and designed to provide voters with an opportunity to meet candidates face-to-face, ask questions and make informed decisions before heading to the polls March 10.

The District 2 seat became vacant earlier this year, prompting the special election. Voters in the district will select a new representative to serve on Clarendon County Council.
