Smokin’ Fur a Cause promises food, fun and family for a good cause

The aroma of barbecue will fill downtown Manning once again as the annual Smokin’ Fur a Cause fundraiser returns Nov. 14–15, bringing two days of food, fun, and community spirit — all to benefit A Second Chance Animal Shelter.

The event, held in the City of Manning Municipal parking lot at Church and Boyce streets, will feature live music, competitions, kids’ activities, and an expanded car show, along with the chance to sample some of the best barbecue in the region.

“This year’s festival is bigger and better in every way,” said organizer Sara Cobb. “We have new grillers, new entertainment, and a much more interactive experience for families. It’s the same heart, but on a whole new level.”

Festivities begin Friday, Nov. 14, from 6–9 p.m. with the popular Anything Butt Competition, where grillers serve up creative dishes that include anything but pork — from sides and appetizers to desserts. Attendees can purchase $1 samples and vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Award.

“It’s one of the most fun parts of the weekend,” Cobb said. “Guests can sample the items, enjoy the atmosphere, and vote with their tickets. At $1 per sample, what a steal!”

The evening will also feature karaoke by K&D Entertainment, plenty of food tastings, and a laid-back chance to meet the teams.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, the gates open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the sanctioned barbecue competition and awards ceremony, presented in partnership with the South Carolina Barbecue Association. Guests can purchase pulled pork samples from each competitor for $1 apiece, or buy full plates by the pound.

“Saturday is all about the main barbecue competition, featuring delicious pulled pork smoked, seasoned, and served with care by each competitor,” said organizer Ruthe Lambert. “Attendees can expect plenty of great food, upbeat music, and a festive environment.”

The day will also include live performances by Tricky Licks Band and local artists, a silent auction, and a car show hosted by the Sumter Cruisers. Kids can enjoy face painting and games designed by local high school students.

This year’s expanded event is made possible through generous support from local sponsors including Lakeside Graffix, The Shoppe on Brooks, Bank of Clarendon, Prothro Chevrolet, Santee Ford, Piggly Wiggly, and Manning Feed Mill.

Every dollar raised benefits A Second Chance Animal Shelter, helping cover medical care, food, spay/neuter services, and shelter for homeless animals.

“The more we raise, the more animals we can save and give a second chance at a loving home,” said Cobb.

Volunteers are still needed for both days of the festival. Shifts run Friday from 5–9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m. To sign up, contact A Second Chance Animal Shelter at 803-473-7075.

While team registration has closed for this year, organizers encourage barbecue lovers to come out, meet the teams, and consider joining next year’s competition.

Cobb said her favorite part is watching Clarendon County come together.

“My favorite part is … all gathering for one purpose: helping animals who can’t help themselves,” she said. “There’s something really special about watching the community unite around good food, good fun, good music, and a meaningful mission.”
