The second annual Back 2 School Summer Town Bash, held on July 20th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 4th St. in Summerton, drew more than 400 attendees, surpassing last year's turnout. The event, hosted by Chief Donell Dixon, the Summerton Police Department, the Town of Summerton, and Annett Smith of Journey Helping Others, honored the late Mayor Tony Junious and celebrated community spirit and collaboration.

“This year, we decided to implement a sign-in sheet and recorded over 400 attendees,” said Chief Dixon. “Last year, we didn’t quite reach that number, so it’s wonderful to see the growth and support from the community.”

The event featured a special raffle for a Power Wheel, donated personally by Chief Dixon, along with a variety of free food including hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, fish, French fries, and free school supplies for children. The highlight for many was the mobile gaming trailer provided by Ultimate Gamers, which included a karaoke setup that was a hit with both kids and adults.

The bash was supported by over 80 sponsors, including Liberty Seafood of Sumter, various bike clubs, and many local churches. These sponsors not only provided financial support but also contributed by preparing and serving food at the event.

“Working with Annette Smith of Journey Helping Others is always a pleasure. I call her my angel because she’s incredible to work with. We’re already planning for next year, hoping to make it even bigger,” Chief Dixon shared.

State Senator Kevin Johnson of District 36 attended the event, commending the efforts of Chief Dixon, the Town of Summerton, and all participants. “This was a huge investment in the lives of our youth and their education. Many school supplies were given away. I was happy to be there and to also be a supporter. It was very appropriate that this event was held in honor and memory of Mayor Tony Junious,” he said.

Kathleen Gibson, Director of K&H Resource Center in Summerton, also praised the event and thanked the organizers, posting on social media, “Remembering the late Mayor Tony Junious was the highlight of today’s event! … Thank You Thank You Thank You to EVERYONE who made today’s event phenomenally successful!”

In addition to the community turnout, Interim Mayor Keith Bowman, Councilwomen LeeAnn Berry and JazLynn Bowman were present, along with Pastor Billy Carlisle and members of Summerton Baptist Church. Apostle Elizabeth Gibson, Mayor Junious’s pastor, attended with her family and church members, contributing to the sense of community and remembrance.

Reflecting on the future of the event, Chief Dixon expressed a desire to continue growing and enhancing the Back 2 School Summer Town Bash. “We’re already preparing for next year, aiming for July 19th. We welcome anyone willing to participate to reach out to us,” he said.

As the town looks forward to next year's event, the success of this year’s bash highlights the dedication and unity of the Summerton community in supporting its youth and honoring its late mayor.
