Ryan James Fischer

Ryan James Fischer, 34, husband of Elizabeth Black Fischer, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Ryan was the South Carolina Sales Manager for US Brick in Columbia and the past Director and Assistant Director of Equipment and Apparel Operations for the University of South Carolina baseball and football teams working for legendary coaches Steve Spurrier and Ray Tanner. He was Student Manager when South Carolina Baseball won back-to-back national championships. Ryan received his Bachelor and Masters’ Degrees in Sports Management from the University of South Carolina.

In addition to his wife of Columbia, he is survived by his parents, John and Sharon Giannelli of Haymarket, VA; brother, Andrew Fischer (Emily); nephews, William and Theodore, all of Chantilly, VA; sister, Alexi Giannelli of Centreville, VA; grandparents, Dora Graham (Burt) of Grand Forks, ND and Pasquale Giannelli of Waterbury, CT; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; father and mother-in-law, Jeffrey and Stephanie Black of Murrells Inlet; brother-in-law, John Landon Black of Charleston; his wife’s grandparents, Jim Black of Manning and Carole Sain of Vale, NC; as well as his South Carolina family, the John Wienges family.

He was predeceased by his grandmother, Suzanne Giannelli; his grandfather, Charles Matthews; and cousin, Matthew Kenney.

Ryan loved boating on Lake Murray and was an avid sports fan.  From the Minnesota Vikings to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, every day was gameday for him.  He loved his friends and family beyond measure, especially the love of his life, Liz, and their soon-to-be born daughter, Elizabeth Giannelli Fischer “Gia”. Ryan will be forever remembered for his infectious laughter, his genuine kindness to everyone he met and his sweet smile. He chose to give others life as an organ donor.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Founders Park, University of South Carolina Baseball Stadium, 431 Williams Street, Columbia, SC 29201, with the Reverend Doctor Steve Shugart officiating.  

Pallbearers will be Michael Roth, Colby Holmes, Tyson Lusk, Robinson Villa, Jordan Gregory, and Thomas Plummer.  

Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of US Brick and the former players, student managers and coaches of the University of South Carolina baseball teams during his tenure.

The family extends their thanks and gratitude to the healthcare heroes at the Medical University of South Carolina, Prisma Health, and McLeod Health.

The family has requested that memorials may be made to the Ryan Fischer Baseball Student Manager Scholarship. Donations can be made payable to the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation and mailed to Rice Athletics Center, 1304 Heyward Street, Columbia, SC 29208.
