Partnering for positivity: 2024 landing clean-up

Posted

Over 50 volunteers gathered at the John C. Land, III Sports Fishing Facility on Thursday morning for a second landing clean-up hosted by Santee Cooper and the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce. In just four hours of work, participants were able to collect close to 100 bags of trash from lakefront and roadside areas.

“Everyone partnering together to make a positive impact is what makes this event so special,” said Jesse Surette, Director of Tourism at the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce. “With just one or two people, it would take days to gather half of the amount collected this morning.”

In addition to combing the John C. Land Complex, volunteers dispersed to clean up several other locations including Taw Caw Park, Alex Harvin Landing, the Borrow Pit along the Santee Dam and other entrance roads. This is the second year that a clean-up of this size has been held, and making it an annual tradition is in line with efforts to ensure landings stay clean during the busy season.

“Santee Cooper’s Environmental Services team, which manages lakes Marion and Moultrie, helped put this event together last year, and during that event we gathered almost an entire roll-off dumpster full of trash and debris,” Surette said. “When the idea came up again this year, it was a no- brainer. The spring fishing season gathers thousands of anglers and guests from near and far to the Santee Cooper Lakes, and we want them to have a positive impression of their time spent here.”
