A Washington, D.C., man died early Monday after the SUV he was driving left Interstate 95 and struck a tree in Clarendon County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell.
The single-vehicle collision occurred at approximately 12:36 a.m. Monday, June 29, on I-95 northbound near the 132-mile marker.
According to SCHP, the driver of a 2026 Subaru Outback was traveling north when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver, identified by Blackwell as Kenneth Charles Darrell, 54, of Washington, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Subaru was injured and transported by EMS to an area hospital. No additional information on the passenger's condition was immediately available.
Blackwell said an autopsy is scheduled to be performed later this week at the Medical University of South Carolina.
The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
