Mt. Hope Scrolls: Who doesn't love spring?

Posted

Who doesn’t love spring? Turns out that there are a lot of people that don’t like spring. There are as many people that dislike spring, as there are people that are upset with summer, winter and fall.

I hate to bring on all this unhappiness. It should be a great season. Flowers blooming, birds singing, and farmers preparing to plant; Norman Rockwell probably painted a wonderful picture of the joy and thrills of the spring season. That’s great. However, I’m running into all the people that can find the minutia of things wrong with this season.

Let’s start with the temperature. Many people are thankful that the temperature is warming up. The first day of spring doesn’t throw a temperature switch. I’ve already run into the people that are complaining because it is still cold in the morning. By afternoon, they have heavy coats to lug around and now it is too hot. Well, it is spring. The temperature people have to compete with the other complainers and complete the sentence about (I hope you people that wanted colder, warmer, hotter or more mild) are happy.

Don’t get started about the pollen. It is springtime. All the budding of plants leads to pollination, bees buzzing and all that stuff. The farmers are plowing up a dust storm, the March winds can’t decide whether it will come in like a lion and go out like a lamb or vice versa. High winds, dry air and fire just add to air quality problems. I know your car is yellow. Wait until May and then wash it.

The spring-cleaning part might be the toughest part of this season. Who came up with this anyway? Besides cleaning up all the pollen: why is it necessary to get rid of all the stuff in your house? It has to be that you stayed inside all winter and just collected stuff.

Maybe the worst part is the time thing. Daylight savings time seems to throw almost everyone for at least a few weeks. Now it’s too dark in the morning and too light in the afternoon. I don’t know when to get up and when to go to bed. Maybe that’s because it is dark in the morning and light in the afternoon. Luckily I managed to get my clocks set in one day.

Okay, that’s all the complaining about spring for this year. I think the birds are out and those spring showers are forecast to start soon. My farmer friends are itching to plant and are making predictions on whether there will be a cold snap before Easter or not. The gardeners are digging around in their yards also. Even the complainers have settled in on the fact that it is spring at least by the calendar.

I think there will be about two more weeks of complaining about spring. Soon there will be preparation about the coming summer and hot weather. Then we can thank those hot weather people and hope they can be happy.  Fall and winter will have there own special problems. I hope all those people can be happy too.

Well, good luck on your journey into spring. I hope you are one of those people that are happy with spring and it is your favorite time of year. How about this? Let’s try to make every day the start of your favorite time of year. It might be easier that way. One of my friends told me the other day that he is doing a lot better now that he has quit worrying about the weather.  He says that we should quit trying to fix everything. It is much cheaper that way.
