Mt. Hope Scrolls: Prank show and the joke is on me

Posted

Do you watch those prank shows? It’s the show that plays a trick on someone. Sometimes they bring in a person in disguise and a person pretending to be an old man is really a professional weightlifter. The person goes into a gym and lifts more weight than the people working out. Sometimes amateurs are pitted against professionals in different sports. All of a sudden the difference between amateurs and pros becomes very apparent.

Most things are a matter of practice time and experience with most of these physical feats. The pros have more practice, experience and temerity to gain all the added skills to be tops in their field. It’s fun to watch as people realize that they are pranked by these pros.

I was watching a show like that recently. A professional football player was in disguise and went to a college practice. He was supposed to be transferring to the school and was coming out for the football team. He came unto the field and starting playing. The quarterbacks on the team were watching as this new transfer came out and started throwing bad passes. Finally, the prankster started throwing passes like a pro quarterback would do it. Then it became apparent that this guy was a real football player and their jobs could be in jeopardy. The coach called all the players in and told them that they had to compete everyday. Then it was revealed that the transfer was really an NFL pro quarterback. The prankster was Jared Goff.

Now the joke is on me. I got interested in Jared Goff. He’s the quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Well, the Lions are having a great year this season and their quarterback is having a great season too. Now I’m interested in watching the Lions and Jared. Last season I hardly watched NFL football and now I’m trying to keep up with the Lions to see how Jared is doing. True is, He’s doing great and the Lions are on a winning streak. Now here I am having to keep up with the Lions because of some little show about a pro playing a trick on some young college kids.

Well, that’s how it goes. It is easy to get sidetracked. You can suddenly become interested in something and before you know it you have to invest all sorts of time and money and other resources into something you didn’t know anything about. One little show and now I have to watch Detroit Lion’s games. It’s unbelievable.

This can happen is almost anything. I was at a sporting clays event. I guy was there and was asked to shoot at the event. He was a salesman for one of the sponsors. A team was short a shooter and asked him to come along with them and shoot. It didn’t take long for him to realize that shooting sporting clays was fun. By the end of the day he was on the path towards being a sporting clays fan.

It wasn’t long before he had bought a fifty thousand dollar pickup, a twenty thousand dollar side by side, a three thousand dollar shotgun and he had to pay $10 a box for shotgun shells. It’s fun but the joke is on him. What price fun? Just think about the money and time spent on hunting and fishing here in the great state of South Carolina. It is incredible. Don’t forget about the 250,000 people that travel every weekend to watch college football.

No wonder those prank shows are popular. Just don’t get caught up in the fun. The joke could be on you.
