Five members of the Manning High School Class of 2026 have received scholarships from the Monarch Strong Corporation, a nonprofit organization founded by Manning High alumni to support local students pursuing higher education.
The scholarships were announced during Manning High School's Senior Awards Night on May 26, recognizing students who demonstrated achievement in academics, leadership and community service.
Monarch Strong officials said the selection process was especially challenging this year because of the strength and competitiveness of the graduating class.
"This year, Monarch Strong is honored to help make educational dreams come true for five deserving Manning High School seniors," the organization said in a statement.
Scholarship recipient Ansh Patel plans to attend the University of South Carolina this fall, where he will major in finance with career goals of becoming an investment banker.
"When my name was announced as a Monarch Strong Scholarship winner, my heart dropped," Patel said. "I felt emotional, excited, and proud all at the same time. It truly means a lot to know that you all believe in me and want to invest in my future."
Linda Strickland, who plans to major in biological sciences at the University of South Carolina before pursuing a career as a cardiologist, said receiving the scholarship was both surprising and rewarding.
"When my name was called as an MSC scholarship winner, I was genuinely shocked and incredibly excited," Strickland said. "In that moment, I felt that all of my hard work, dedication, and perseverance had truly paid off."
She said the scholarship will help offset college expenses while encouraging her to continue serving as a role model for younger students.
Mary-Esther McCabe, another University of South Carolina-bound student majoring in biological sciences, hopes to become a dermatologist.
"I felt so excited and grateful to be awarded this scholarship, as it will help me accomplish my college endeavors," McCabe said.
Thomas Herlong, who plans to attend The Citadel and major in business, said he hopes to become a real estate agent while also pursuing a commission as an Air Force officer.
"I was extremely happy and thankful that I was one of the chosen people," Herlong said.
Robyn Johnson will attend Claflin University, where she plans to major in business administration before pursuing a career in real estate.
"When my name was called as a Monarch Strong scholarship winner, I was surprised, blessed, and thankful," Johnson said.
Monarch Strong Corporation was established in June 2021 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by Manning High School alumni. The organization hosts two annual fundraising events, with proceeds supporting scholarships for Manning High seniors.
Since launching its scholarship program in 2022, Monarch Strong has awarded scholarships to 23 students.
Organization leaders credited annual fundraising efforts and community sponsors for making the scholarships possible and said they remain committed to investing in the next generation of local leaders.
