Library seeks community input on how to utilize funds from recent grant

Posted

Holly Cockfield, Director of Harvin Clarendon County Library, has been working at the library for 2 years, dedicating herself to this important job that helps the community. She has procured the help of the public and private sectors and reaches out to the public to provide resources and to receive feedback.

She has taken the initiative to reach out and ask for a grant to improve the library. They have now received a $10,000 grant from the American Library Association, and Cockfield is hoping to be able to replace the doors at the library with this grant. She says, “Our initial project is to change out the library doors; the ones we have are extremely heavy. And, so, if you have an assisted device, or you’re pushing a stroller, or even if you’re just carrying things, it would be so useful to have automatic doors.”

This grant comes with a community conversation in which the public can have a say in what should be done with the grant. This decision will be made in the coming month of April, and Cockfield is excited to hear the community’s input on how to best utilize the funds. She believes that by listening to the needs and desires of the community, they can make improvements that will benefit everyone who uses the library.

Another upcoming event at the adored library is an event called Books for Babies. This program focuses on helping babies excel in the future. By having parents read books to their children from a young age, the children develop these skills earlier in life, building a strong foundation for language and reading. This program is sponsored by Georgia Pacific and Reach Out & Read, who have generously partnered with the Harvin Clarendon County Library to make this possible.

The Books for Babies event will provide parents with resources and information on the importance of reading to their children from an early age. Children who receive their 12 month checkup in Clarendon County will have the opportunity to receive free books to take home and continue nurturing a love for reading.

By partnering with organizations like Georgia Pacific and Reach Out & Read, the library is able to reach even more families and make a positive impact on the lives of children. With the support of these sponsors, the library can continue to innovate and bring valuable programs to the community for years to come.
