Larry Elmon Hancock, Sr.

Larry Elmon Hancock, Sr., 94, widower of Carolyn Long Hancock, died Saturday, December 14, 2019, at Covenant Place of Sumter.

 

Born October 3, 1925, in Lenox, Georgia, he was a son of the late Jesse Warnell Hancock and the late Gertrude Rosie Taylor Hancock. He was married to his loving wife, Carolyn, for 65 years.

 

He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving in the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division across France and Germany. Larry was a manager of the Belk Hudson department store, where he dedicated over 45 years of his life prior to retirement. He was a faithful servant of God, a prayer warrior and an active member of Manning United Methodist Church. He and his wife were also former members of Lake Marion Baptist Church and First Baptist Church Orangeburg. Faithful to the end, one of his favorite scripture verses was “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

 

He is survived by two daughters, Jan H. Johnston of Dallas, Texas and Dawn H. Griffith (Louis) of Manning; a son, Larry Hancock, Jr. of Los Angeles, California; four grandchildren, Jeremy Griffith, Joseph Griffith (Tonya), Anna Griffith Payne (Chase) and Noah Griffith (Ragan); eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Shirley Rowan (Bobby) and a niece and nephew of Summerdale, Alabama; and a special family friend, Dr. David Albracht of Dallas, Texas.

 

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kem Thomas and Chaplain Marvis Stewart officiating. Visitation was at 10 a.m. prior to the service and interment followed at Memorial Park Cemetery in Orangeburg. The family also received visitors at the home of Dawn and Louis Griffith located at 312 N. Meadow Drive, Manning.

 

Pallbearers were Joseph Griffith, Jake Buddin, Curt Campbell, Will Buyck, Ron Wall, and Gene Atkinson.

 

A special thanks to the many dedicated professionals who provided loving care to Larry, including Carolina Caregivers: Wendy Felder, Jonell Jefferson, Willie Mae Cokley, Bessie Love, Carolyn White, Ida McCain, Lethia Greene, Betty Johnson, Ethel Muldrow, Earnestine Singleton, and Darlene Felder; Covenant Place of Sumter staff and friends, his dedicated neighbor Maria Bender, and the Prisma Health Tuomey Hospice team.
