Lanitra Bennett, a resident and native of Summerton, SC, partnered with the Lighthouse Foundation of South Carolina and hosted the first annual Juneteenth Pageant on June 3. The pageant was for all black women ages 4 through 18.

When asked how she came up with the idea to host this pageant, Bennett stated “I wanted to find a fun way to educate and empower women of all ages.”

Bennett is also the owner and CEO of Resilient Dreamers, which had an impact on her determination to make this pageant happen. Resilient Dreamers is a new upcoming business that helps others become their own boss online or in their own way. Resilient Dreamers Community Outreach is helping educate our community and Miss Juneteenth pageant is just one of many ways to educate and empower our youth, in this case our young women.

In the future, Bennett intends to have the pageant all-inclusive for women as well as men. Educating our community is close to her heart as well as the meaning behind Juneteenth, as it is apart of her culture and the culture of many who live in our community. This pageant was a great way of spreading positivity, inspiration, and education. As the pageant grows so will the learning opportunities in our community.
