Julia Mattie Hagerman Akers, 94, widow of Rev. Harold Akers, died Thursday, March 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born December 11, 1930, in Bradshaw, WV, she was a daughter of the late John Henry “JR” Hagerman and the late Hattie Mae Vance Hagerman. She was a member of Roderfield House of Prayer in West Virginia. She loved sewing, quilting, gardening and canning.
She is survived by 10 children, Rev. Johnnie Akers (Josie) of WV, William Akers of WV, Rev. Lana Lambert (Larry) of NC, Loretta Duncan (Valentia) of WV, Brenda Hagerman of VA, Carol Stimson (Brian) of WV, Elise Cowan (Tim) of Summerton, Doug Akers of IL, Verdie Shaffer of WV, and Jerry Akers (Julie) of Summerton; two adopted children, Diedra Steele (Denny) of WV and Raymond Akers (Tanya) of Turbeville; 42 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren; and 4 siblings.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Ruby King and Diana Chaffens; two daughters-in-law, April Akers and Drema Akers; a granddaughter, Julia Jean King; and 11 siblings.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025, at St. Paul Cemetery with the Rev. Johnnie Akers and the Rev. Lana Lambert officiating.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home.
