If you’ve visited Harvin Clarendon County Library lately, you may have noticed a fresh new face in the building. Holly Cockfield has joined the team as the new director. The director of the library is in charge of planning the direction the library will be going in the future. This entails deciding where the library will focus its efforts and how it will use its resources. Cockfield is also responsible for communicating with the county, other libraries, and the state. The director position exists to ensure the library, and its functions, run smoothly.
Cockfield is originally from Georgetown county. She completed her bachelor’s degree in English at Coker College in Hartsville, SC. She then attended the University of South Carolina, where she earned her master’s degree in library science. Her favorite book is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Though she’s not from the area, Cockfield has already been charmed by the people of Clarendon. When asked what attracted her to Clarendon, she said
“The people. Everyone here has been extremely nice and it just seems like a very positive community with a lot of exciting things going on. It felt like something I wanted to be a part of.”
Cockfield has big goals planned for the future of Harvin Clarendon County Library. She wants the library to be a bigger part of the community, and she is taking steps to make that happen. More events are being planned at the library in order to encourage more people to visit and participate. The library’s Facebook page is being updated more frequently to inform the townspeople about these events.
She described some of the upcoming events, like the Tiny Talon Tales Raptor Exhibit. The exhibit will take place Thursday, September 22 at 12:30PM. The Carolina Raptor Center will be visiting with some of their live birds. It will be a fun and educational visit.
There will be a party called Only Murders in the Library Thursday, September 29 at 5:30PM. It will be a murder mystery party where participates will be encouraged to work together to solve a fictional murder case using photos, maps, and pieces of evidence. There will be food from local downtown businesses available. If this party is a success, Cockfield hopes to make it a regular event at the library.
Knit Night will be held Thursday, October 6 at 5PM. Cockfield wants everyone to know that even though it’s called “knit night,” crafters of all kinds are welcome to join and meet fellow crafters, and share skills with each other. Knit Night will be held once a month, and it is a great way to meet new people and make friends in the crafting community.
All of these events are open to the public, and hopefully they will allow more people to experience the resources and services the library provides to them. Cockfield expressed her interest in not only bringing people to the library, but also having the library be a more active participant in outside community events.
