Laurence Manning Academy middle and high school students will be better equipped to tackle standardized tests thanks to a generous donation from the business community.
Deercreek at Wyboo and ERA Wilder Realty donated five scientific calculators, one graphing calculator, nine flash drives and three electric pencil sharpeners to LMA Headmaster Spencer Jordan this morning in the school's gymnasium.
"It speaks volumes about our community and the businesses in our community who want to give back," Jordan told the students. "At some point when you're business leaders in the community, you should be willing to give back as well for endeavors greater than yourself and greater than profit."
The calculators will be integral to tackling equations in Alegbra 2 classes, he said, and prepping for SATs and ACTs.
Julie Rickenbaker of ERA Wilder has a 7th grader, Carrie, at LMA; her colleague Scott Wannamaker has two Swampcat sons -- Parker is a sophomore and Will, a Clemson University freshman, graduated last year.
Nena Bruffey and her husband John, who own and are developing Deercreek at Wyboo, said they just want to give back to the community.
"Since being here we've heard wonderful things about Laurence Manning -- its teachers, parents and students, and we heard you had a need for a few things," she said. "We wanted to contribute and let you guys know we're here and proud of what you're doing."
After the event, Bruffey said Deercreek at Wyboo is seeing a lot of interest as the first 18 acre phase of development gains momentum and takes shape. A total of 166 acres blends golf course living next to Lake Marion.
