Free tax preparation at the library

Posted

The IRS in partnership with the Levi Pearson Scholarship Foundation is offering free tax help at the Harvin Clarendon County Library, located at 215 N. Brooks, Manning. The service is courtesy of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The VITA program provides free basic income tax return preparation to qualified individuals in local communities. IRS-certified volunteers are on hand to inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly.

“Our site generally helps people whose incomes are $60,000 or less prepare their federal and South Carolina income tax returns and provide free electronic filing,” said Arthur Moyd, Site Coordinator at the VITA Tax Center. “Due to Covid-19, tax documents can be dropped off to be prepared. Clients will be contacted for pickup once taxes have been completed.”

To have a return prepared by a volunteer, individuals must bring valid photo identification and Social Security Cards (or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers) for themselves, spouses and dependents. They should also bring wage and earnings statements (Forms W-2), interest and dividend statements (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s return, and any other information concerning their income and expenses for 2022. For joint returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

Taxpayers should ensure their Form W-2, Wage Statement(s), will be mailed to the correct address by their employers to receive it on time. If in doubt, their employer should be contacted.
