Fishing tournaments to cast economic benefits for Clarendon County

Posted

Clarendon County is set to welcome a series of professional fishing tournaments this spring, bringing not only top-tier anglers but also significant economic opportunities to the region. The events will be hosted at John C. Land Landing, renowned for its scenic views of Lake Marion and its prime fishing waters.

The upcoming schedule boasts a variety of tournaments starting in February, including the return of the Major League Fishing Bass Fishing League Regional Championship on February 22. March brings several highlights, such as the National Professional Fishing League (NPFL) event from March 6 to 8, which draws elite anglers from across the country. According to Sadie Serio, Director of Tourism for Clarendon County, these tournaments are more than just competitions—they’re community-wide celebrations.

“This year, we’re adding a small food truck festival during the weigh-ins for the first time,” Serio said. “It’s a great way to engage families and generate some revenue for the chamber while supporting local businesses.”

The NPFL event is particularly noteworthy for its broader community involvement. Anglers will engage with local students in fishing demonstrations and provide outreach at senior centers and the animal shelter. The event also includes a round-table podcast featuring discussions about Clarendon County and its local attractions, showcasing the area to a national audience.

The economic impact of these tournaments is significant. With hundreds of anglers, families, and staff attending, local businesses stand to benefit. Hotels, vacation rentals, and Airbnbs are expected to see full bookings, while local grocery stores, fuel stations, tackle shops, and restaurants anticipate increased patronage.

“It’s a tremendous boost for the local economy,” Serio explained. “The anglers spend on accommodations, food, and supplies, and the publicity helps put Clarendon County on the map as a prime fishing destination.”

Also returning is the popular Queen City Kayak series, with events on March 29 and later in the fall. “They absolutely love Lake Marion,” Serio said. “It’s always exciting to have them back. They’re great to work with and really enjoy the area.”

The tournaments are part of an ongoing effort to make Clarendon County a premier destination for outdoor sports. With plans to expand future events and explore opportunities like craft vendor markets, the county is focused on making these tournaments more than just competitions—they’re experiences for locals and visitors alike.
