Fire damages recently renovated Taw Caw Park

A fire at Taw Caw Park on December 23 caused extensive damage to the boardwalk near the end of the peninsula, just months after the park completed major renovations to its infrastructure.

Clarendon County Fire Rescue (CCFR) responded to the blaze around 10 p.m., after a passerby reported seeing flames. According to CCFR, the fire consumed multiple sections of the boardwalk, which was originally constructed in the late 1970s and underwent a $28,000 renovation earlier this year.

“The fire was burning intensely at the far end of the boardwalk,” a CCFR spokesperson said. “Due to the remote location, we couldn’t get hose lines to the site. We relied on water extinguishers, a bucket brigade, and eventually had to cut out a two-foot section of the boardwalk to stop the fire from spreading.”

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours, working to extinguish the flames. No injuries were reported, and the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials suspect the fire may have been started by someone attempting to stay warm on the cold night.

“We didn’t find any evidence of grills or other equipment, but it’s possible that a cigarette or other small flame could have ignited the dry leaves and brush,” the spokesperson added.

The damaged section of the boardwalk is currently taped off, and repairs are expected to begin soon. Parks and Recreation Director Paul McCulloch confirmed that the county’s general insurance policy will cover the estimated $11,000 repair costs. Unlimited Enterprises of Turbeville has been contracted to complete the work, which is expected to take about a week.

“The fire could have been much worse given the dry conditions that night,” McCulloch said. “We’re grateful for the efforts of our firefighters to contain it, and we’re committed to making the necessary repairs to reopen the boardwalk safely.”

The fire marks a setback for Taw Caw Park, which recently completed renovations to its boardwalk and piers, enhancing the site’s appeal for local schools and nature enthusiasts. Despite this incident, McCulloch remains optimistic about the park’s future.

“Taw Caw is a beautiful community resource,” he said. “We’re committed to repairing the damage and ensuring it remains a safe and welcoming place for visitors.”
