Dr. Asa Quincy Hatfield, Jr. passed away surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at the age of 78, in Greenville. Born on February 5, 1947, in Spartanburg, Asa’s life was one marked by achievement, kindness, and a passion for helping others.
Asa graduated from Newberry High School and later from Erskine College, where his journey into education and sports began. He was a beloved coach and teacher at Christian Academy in Manning, where he led the girls’ basketball team to a State Championship. His success continued at Williamsburg Academy in Kingstree, where he coached the boys’ baseball teams to two State Championships, and at Laurence Manning Academy in Manning, where he helped build the football program. His academic pursuits didn’t stop there; in 1977, Asa graduated with honors from MUSC’s School of Pharmacy, receiving the Outstanding Student of the Year Award and setting the stage for his future endeavors in healthcare.
In 1984, after earning his medical degree from The Medical University of South Carolina, Asa opened the Hatfield Clinic for Family Medicine. For over three decades, he served his community as an adored and respected family doctor, always putting the needs of his patients first and ensuring they received the highest quality care. He extended his caring touch as a Hospice Doctor for Medical Services of America.
Asa’s zest for life extended beyond his professional career. He was an avid golfer who cherished the opportunity to play at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Course. His love for the outdoors was evident in his beautifully kept yard, which won him several Yard of the Month accolades. Asa’s need for speed was fulfilled by flying in an F16 and participating in the NASCAR experience. A passionate football fan, especially of the Clemson Tigers, he dedicated his time as a team doctor for many local sports programs. His simple pleasures included enjoying a number 3 from Chick-Fil-A, a refreshing Coca Cola, and the company of his devoted dog.
Asa’s legacy is carried on by his loving family: his children, Elizabeth Hatfield Lee (Tripp), Asa Quincy “Quin” Hatfield (Angie), Anna Hatfield Reese (Ryan), Alexandra “Alex” Hatfield Driver (Stuart), and David Christian Hatfield (Bailey Duffy); his cherished grandchildren, Eadon, Ragin, Anna and Davis Lee, Acie, Mae Harmon and Knox Hatfield, Jackson, Clark, Hattie and Ruthie Reese, and Mary Jennings Driver; his sisters, Harriet Hatfield Joye and Janet Hatfield Dawson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Asa Quincy Hatfield, Sr. and Ann Letha Turner Hatfield, and his brother, Lieutenant David Alexander Hatfield of the South Carolina Air National Guard.
