Clarendon County School District cut the ribbon Aug. 6 on the new Walker Gamble Elementary School, a state-of-the-art campus designed to deliver a modern, innovative learning environment with expanded capacity, safety measures and technology, the district said.

The building features significant design improvements, including energy-efficient systems and enhanced natural lighting, as well as flexible learning spaces that adapt to a variety of teaching methods. Integrated advanced technology is intended to support interactive and immersive instruction, according to the district.

The facility includes 30 classrooms with capacity for as many as 600 students. Beyond traditional classrooms, it adds specialized spaces such as STEM labs, art rooms and a media center. An outdoor learning environment was built to encourage exploration and creativity and to give students unique opportunities to engage with their surroundings, the district said.

Security and safety were priorities in the design. The school includes controlled access points, advanced surveillance systems and enhanced emergency-response features intended to provide peace of mind for families while supporting a safe learning environment.

Superintendent Dr. Shawn Johnson called the opening a milestone for the district. “Walker Gamble Elementary School exemplifies our district’s unwavering commitment to offering an exceptional learning environment for our students,” Johnson said in a statement. “This school is built to inspire innovation, promote growth, and prepare our children for a successful future.” He expressed gratitude to Kevin L. Johnson and Kimberly O. Johnson for their roles in securing approval and funding.

The community response has been “overwhelmingly positive,” the district said, noting that teachers are eager to use the new spaces, students are excited to explore their classrooms and parents appreciate the investment in facilities and technology. The old Walker Gamble building will remain in service for now as a historic campus and emergency shelter, further enriching resources available to residents.

The district described the project as a testament to local and state commitments to a forward-thinking, inclusive educational environment. Johnson said, “By investing in our schools, we are investing in the future of our community, creating chances for every child to succeed.”
