A Clarendon County man was killed Tuesday night after being struck by a pickup truck while walking along a highway in Sumter County, according to officials.
James McCoy, 45, of Clarendon County, was identified as the pedestrian killed in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker described as an accident. The crash occurred around 9 p.m. on U.S. 15 near the intersection with Lakewood Drive, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
According to Glover, McCoy was walking south on the highway when he was struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado traveling in the same direction. The driver of the pickup, who was alone in the vehicle, was not injured.
McCoy was transported to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia, where he later died from his injuries, Baker said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.
So far in 2025, at least six people have died in traffic-related incidents in Sumter County, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Statewide, 278 people have died in collisions this year.
