Clarendon County is getting a new elementary school

Posted

This Wednesday, September 14, the South Carolina Department of Education made an exciting announcement. Clarendon County School District will receive a $42 million grant. The grant is part of a $140 budget the department has saved for assisting underserved schools. Senator Kevin Johnson played a big part in securing the money grant for Clarendon County.

The money will mainly be used to rebuild Walker Gamble Elementary School in New Zion. Walker Gamble is about 70 years old, and it has had very few updates or remodels throughout the years. The new school should be built in less than two years, and it will be built at a different location. County officials want to transform the old building into something new instead of just tearing it down. The new school building will be equipped with stronger security measures in order to improve the safety of the children.

The remaining funds will be used to make improvements on the schools in Manning. Additions and remodels will be implemented.
