Clarendon County government department spotlight: Weldon Auditorium, Clarendon County’s community hub

Posted

Nestled in the heart of Clarendon County, Weldon Auditorium, stands as a vibrant symbol of community, resilience, and culture. Originally built in the mid-1950s as part of Manning High School, Weldon has transformed over decades, emerging from periods of decline into a fully revitalized venue that continues to unite and inspire.

A history of resilience

After a fire in the 1980s led to the relocation of Manning High School, Weldon fell into disrepair. However, a dedicated group of community leaders, many of whom once performed on its stage, spearheaded a restoration effort. Their vision culminated in December 2010 with a grand reopening gala, showcasing a beautifully updated facility that included a new lobby, atrium, and enclosed loggia.

A state-of-the-art facility

Today, Weldon Auditorium boasts 1,100 seats, complete handicapped accessibility, and versatile projection screens for large and intimate audiences. Its modern sound system delivers a rich audio experience, while internet connectivity brings global opportunities to local events. The soaring atrium welcomes visitors, and the lobby proudly displays a donor wall honoring those who made Weldon’s revival possible.

The northern loggia features the Clarendon County Athletic Hall of Fame and an art corridor that has showcased work from local and globally renowned artists alike.

The center of community life

Over the past 14 years, Weldon’s stage has hosted an impressive array of events, from national recording artists, comedians, and plays to graduations, beauty pageants, dance recitals, and even a regional bodybuilding competition. Highlights include full-house concerts by Fort Jackson’s Army Band, gospel concerts, and statewide spelling bees.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Weldon served as a vital resource for drive-through testing, underscoring its role as a place where the community comes together in times of need. The auditorium is also home to annual events like the Guardian ad Litem Candlelight Vigil in April and Clarendon Behavioral Health’s substance abuse and suicide awareness event in October.

A promising future

Weldon continues to evolve, with families now using the venue for Celebration of Life services and inquiries about hosting weddings increasing. With its central location, accessibility to major interstates, and proximity to cities like Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach, Weldon is poised to become the premier venue for events of all kinds.

More than a venue

Weldon Auditorium isn’t just a building—it’s a gathering place where memories are made, talents are celebrated, and connections are forged. From concerts to community meetings, it’s where Clarendon County comes together.
